POSITION OBJECTIVE

Responsible for measuring, mapping, and documenting land, air space, and boundaries at Metro-North Railroad's territories in order to confirm or establish Metro-North's property lines.  The position will work with surveying parties to set control points and ensure proper recording of survey results for Metro-North's usage.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

·          Prepare boundary and right-of-way surveys, sketches, and descriptions for site planning and engineering projects.

·          Measure construction sites and provide relevant data regarding location, elevation, and dimension of land features.

·          Establish official boundaries and write descriptions of land for deeds, and other legal documents, as needed by Metro-North.

·          Manage survey party to ensure accurate compilation of survey data.

·          Inspect railroad maintenance and rehabilitation work to ensure conformance with plans and Metro-North's standards.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·          Knowledge of professional surveying principles, techniques and procedures.

·          Working knowledge in the use of surveying instruments, drafting tools and equipment.

·          Ability to conduct field surveys. 

·          Proficient in use of CADD/AUTOCAD.

·          Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) and/or comparable applications.

·          Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and capable of working independently.

·          Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·          Strong ability to interact with all levels of management within Metro-North as well as local government and community representatives.

·          Must have a valid driver's license.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

·          Familiarity with right-of-way and railroad standards.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

·          Minimum two to four years experience in cartography or other mapping science.

 

·          Must be registered in State of New York as Professional Land Surveyor and able to obtain registration in the State of Connecticut within two years of appointment to position.  If registered in the State of New York or Connecticut, it should encompass two to four years experience in cartography or other mapping science.  If candidate is not registered in State of New York as Professional Land Surveyor they must become registered within two years.

 

OTHER COMMENTS

·          This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicological testing.

The McLaren Engineering Group (MEG), a New York based firm, has immediate openings in its West Nyack Headquarters for qualified surveyors. Our survey department provides direct support to MEG engineering divisions on various large-scale engineering projects in the NY/NJ metro area. We also serve public and private clients directly with topographic, boundary, ROW, hydrographic, GPS and construction survey services.

 

We are looking for ambitious crew chiefs and instrument operators to staff a growing survey group. We are also seeking experienced office surveyors who are a capable of taking field data from the data collectors, reducing and analyzing data and deeds, working in Carlson and CAD to prepare pre-final maps for final review and approval by the supervising licensed land surveyor.

 

Successful candidates will have a broad range of experience and education in field and/or office surveying equipment, software and technology. We use:

  • Topcon Total Stations, TDS Data Collectors, Foresight DXM, Carlson Survey, AutoCAD and LDD
  • Topcon and Trimble GPS, Topcon Tools, OPUS
  • Hydrolite Single-Beam Hydrographic Survey System and Hypack Software

Job description: The candidate will work as a field/office surveying technician.  In the field the candidate will act as a crew chief and perform a variety of work including; boundary, topographic & planimetric surveys, street regrading, street monumentation and establishing bench marks.  In the office the candidate will do research, plot deeds, and plot surveys on the latest version of AutoCAD LDD.

Required Skills: The candidate should have a good working knowledge of modern surveying equipment including total stations, data collection, electronic levels and AutoCAD.  Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning Systems is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications: An associates degree in Surveying, Engineering Science or in an engineering technology field; or two years of paraprofessional or professional work experience, or its part time equivalent in surveying or civil engineering is required.  This is a Civil Service tested position.  Titles are in the civil engineering field and a good engineering background will be helpful.
